Benjamin Bryan Jr. was born on February 4, 1947, to the late Ben Bryant and Lucinda Grant Bryant in Cross, South Carolina. He was the eldest son of eight children. He departed this life on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at his home in Columbia, South Carolina.
Benjamin graduated from Cross High School in 1965, where he proudly played on the football team. After graduation, he moved to Brooklyn, New York, to explore employment opportunities. In time, he returned to South Carolina and on December 28, 1966, he married the love of his life, Bessie P. Simmons, in Eutawville, South Carolina. Soon after, the couple moved to Brooklyn, New York, where they began their life together.
Benjamin began his career with NYNEX/Bell Atlantic, later Verizon, where he worked diligently and advanced to the position of Central Office Technician. After more than 30 years of service, he retired in 2001 and relocated to Columbia, South Carolina. In addition to his career, Benjamin also earned his locksmith license, further showcasing his interest in learning new skills.
A man of many talents and interests, Benjamin enjoyed playing the bass guitar, painting scenic portraits, and playing golf and chess. In his youth, he also pursued amateur boxing, even stepping into the ring at Madison Square Garden.
Benjamin was deeply loved by his family and friends. He is survived by his devoted wife, Bessie P. Bryan; his daughters, Jennifer Bryan, Patricia Bryan-Rodgers, Jessica L. Bryan, Shaunda Gilchrist, and Latasha Gilchrist; his grandchildren, Charles Malik Rodgers, Eric Robinson Jr., and Collin M. Rodgers; his son-in-law, Charles Rodgers; his siblings, Wilhelmina Gethers (the late James), the late Ellen Middleton (St. Julian), Carrie Benning (the late Melvin), James Bryant (Mae Allen), Virginia Wright, Mary Johnson, and Joseph (Elisha) Bryant; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Benjamin’s life was one of love, hard work, and creativity. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A funeral will be held in his honor at 11:00a.m. on September 20, 2025 at The Middleton Mortuary Chapel. (810 Dawson St. Eutawville, SC)
