James Jones was born on July 22, 1957, in Vance, SC to the late Victoria Shuler. He peacefully
transitioned on Monday, August 25, 2025, at MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center in
Columbia, SC, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family.
At an early age he was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Vance, SC. He attended Roberts
High School and upon his graduation in 1978 he relocated to Jersey City, New Jersey. After
spending 3 years there he moved to Stamford, Connecticut where he lived for 39 years before
returning home to Holly Hill, South Carolina in 2020.
James worked diligently for 20 years at Pitney Bowes as a Warehouse Assembly Associate,
5 years part time at Stamford Hospital as an Orderly and 10 years at Wal-Mart as a Sales
Associate.
Known by his friends and family as “Billy” and to his nieces and nephews as “Big Unk” he was
a vibrant, fun-loving guy who never met a stranger. He loved to laugh and make others laugh,
with his lively conversation. He was a lifelong fan of the Miami Dolphins football team and the
Baltimore Orioles baseball team.
He was preceded in death by his father, three brothers, Leroy Jones, Thomas Jones and Freddie
Jamison; two sisters, Georgia Mae Jones and Mattie Davis; and his sister-in-law Deaconess Alice
Jones.
Left to cherish his memories are two brothers, Deacon Nathaniel Jones of Greensboro, NC,
James (Rebecca) Jamison of Connecticut; seven sisters, Mary Ruth Jones of Vance, SC,
Wilhelmena Jones of Vance, SC, Frances (David) Drayton of Orangeburg, SC, Marilyn Fuller of
Vance, SC, Alberta Johnson of Connecticut, Shelly Washington of Jersey City, NJ, Eileen
Arroyo of Virginia; his lifelong best friend Gregory Miller of Columbia, SC and a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins and friends.
