LW Sumpter, affectionately known as “T.W.”, was born in Orangeburg County, South Carolina on October 4, 1950, to the late Elijah Sumter Sr. and Mamie Williams Sumter. He peacefully departed this earthly life on October 29, 2024, to reunite with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his forever love, Sarah Ann Snell Sumter. Along with his wife, LW’s parents and siblings, Apostle Elizabeth DuPree, James Sumter, Jay L. Sumter, L.D. Sumter, Elijah Sumter Jr., Vernell Sumter Guess, and Freddie L. Sumter, preceded him in transition.
LW was raised in the church. At an early age he accepted Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and joined Rock Hill AME Church. He was educated in the public school system of Orangeburg County. LW entered the workforce in various capacities, however, after many years, he accepted his divine calling as an entrepreneur. LW started Sumpter Construction, which specialized in residential buildings for over 30 years. A friend to all he met, some called him LW, “TW”, “Thomas”, “Rev”. and “Dub”. His genuine smile, kind heart, and giving spirit are only a few characteristics which made him special. LW was always willing to assist anyone in need, without looking for anything in return.
LW’s life is truly a testament of Philippians 4:13 “I can do all this through him who gives me strength”. Faced with the tragic loss of his mother and wife, LW became the primary caretaker of his three children (ages 6, 2, and 11 months). A true protector and provider, he faced this adversity with strength and perseverance. He was determined to ensure that his children were reared in an environment filled with unconditional love. In his later years, he faced many health challenges. His willingness to fight and his love of family motivated him to keep pressing on. When he wasn’t feeling his best, LW always acknowledged the goodness of God in his life. He adopted as his motto, the title to his favorite song, “When you’ve been Blessed, Feels like Heaven.”
To keep his legacy alive and to cherish his memories: three devoted and loving children: Arletta S. Carr of Columbia, SC, Dedrick (Marlana) Sumpter of Conyers, GA, and Keydra Green of Columbia, SC; six grandchildren, whom he absolutely adored: Sierra, Damon, Quincy III, Santiana, Zoey, and Dedrick Jr.; two great grand-daughters, Serenity and De ’Anni, one great-grandson, L.J.; four brothers, Lawrence (Judith) Sumter of Lawrenceville, GA, Harry Sumter of Orangeburg, SC, Connor Sumter Sr. of Miami, FL, and Walter (Betty) Sumter of Vance, SC; special extended family: Janet Halbur, Mark, Kali, and Jade; 8 additional sisters-in-law, 3 brothers-in-law, lifelong business partners, Donell, Thomas, Rod, Curtis, Lee and Ervin; a host of nieces and nephews who immensely loved “Uncle Smiley” and other extended family, friends, and loved ones.
