Lillie Mae Simmons, affectionately known as “Mae,” was born July 19, 1936, in Cross, South Carolina, to the late Flander Washington and Matilda D. Brown. The Lord called her to eternal rest on Sunday, August 25, 2024.
She attended the public schools of Berkeley County. At an early age, she entered the workforce and held many jobs (housekeeper, caretaker, and sitter). She was a faithful member of Zion United Methodist Church and attended regularly, until she became ill. She was a member of the gospel choir, United Methodist Women, organizer of our annual baby contest, president of the Usher Board, as well as a member of Home Charity Lodge #12.
Before her health declined, she loved making pies, canning up fruits and vegetables, and fishing. She enjoyed talking on the phone with family and friends, listening to the soaps, watching game shows, the news, and online church services. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Arthur Simmons, her daughter; Rachel; two grandsons; Shermont and Jorard; granddaughter, Nakia; three sisters, Dorothy, Lillian, and Viola; six brothers, James, Andrew, John, General, Francis, and George; one uncle, Willie; one daughter in law (Hilda) and one son in law (Jacob).
Lillie leaves to cherish her memories: her daughters, Lucille (Levi), Celia (Samuel), Susan, Brenda, and Dollene (Lester); sons, John (Carolyn), Cleveland (Wynetha), and Louis; sisters, Eloise (Elijah), Mary, Martha, Rosa (Cornelius), and Dorothy; brothers, Louis (Ceola) and Adam (Carol); God-children, Ethel, Inez, Patrick, and April; twenty-seven grandchildren; fifty-two great-grandchildren; fourteen great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
