Mariah Washington, affectionately known as “Pooker,” was born in Vance, SC, on November 11, 1937. She was the daughter of Estelle and Ernest Vogt.
She was called home to be with God on November 5, 2024, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Orangeburg, SC. She grew up in the Vance and Eutawville areas and was educated in the local schools of Orangeburg County.
In 1957, she met and married Sam Washington, Sr. Soon after, they relocated to New York City. She was a wonderful homemaker who took care of her husband and sons. Mariah was a dependable community advocate for the community of East Harlem.
Mariah was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Washington, Sr.; parents, Ernest and Estelle; three brothers, Benjamin, James, and Ernest Jr.; four sisters, Maxine, Bertha, Estelle, and Sarah.
Mariah leaves behind to cherish her memories: her two sons, Benjamin Washington and Sam Washington, Jr., of New York; two sisters, Erenstine McKnight of Florida and Eula Baker of Vance, SC; three brothers-in-law, Henry (Mary), Robert (Stella), and Andrew Washington of Summerville; godson, Kenneth Vogt; special sister, Annie Clark; special brother, Isassc Washington; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
