Mr. Sam Alphonso Spann, Jr., age 67, passed away on May 14, 2026, in Augusta, Georgia. Born on February 22, 1959, in Charleston, South Carolina, Sam lived a life marked by service, creativity, and meaningful connections.
A proud graduate of Burke High School’s Class of 1977 in Charleston County Schools, Sam went on to serve his country with distinction in the United States Army and later the Army Reserve. His military career was honored with numerous accolades, including the Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Professional Development Ribbon, Marksman Rifle Medal, and Marksman Grenade Medal.
His dedication and commitment to excellence were evident throughout his years of service. Sam was a man of deep faith who found great joy in connecting with others and sharing his artistic talents through drawing. His vibrant personality and creative spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Whether through his warm humor or his artful expressions, Sam had a unique ability to bring light and laughter to those around him.
He is survived by his loving mother, Wilhemina Sanders- Spann; his devoted daughter, Samantha Spann-Rolland; and his son-in-love, Marion Rolland. He also leaves behind his siblings: Albert Lester Spann, Jeremiah Spann, Rachel Gailer Spann, Emily Spann-Brown, and Alfredel Sammetta Spann.
A host of nieces and nephews also mourn his passing. He was preceded in death by his father and brother Jerome Frazier.
Sam’s legacy is one of love, service to others, and boundless creativity. May the memory of his life bring comfort to all who knew him as they celebrate the profound impact he made during his journey here on Earth.
