Jefferson Johnson, 90, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2024, at home in the town of Eutawville, SC. He was born June 10, 1933 in Eutawville, SC, the son of the late Eddie Johnson and Rebeccker Haskell.
Jefferson attended St. James Gailliard Elementary School S.C., Rosen-Roberts High School (S.C.) and Baruch College (NY). He served in the US Army (Korean War) as Kitchen Supervisor from 1955 to 1958. After serving in the US Army, he moved to New York City where he pursued careers at Otis Elevator Manufacturing Company, New York Hospital, NYC Housing Authority and Mt. Calvery Day Care Center. After retiring in 1992 from NYC Housing Authority as Elevator Mechanic he pursued other passions for Real Estate, Computer Technology and General Contracting.
Jefferson and his wife Rosalind moved to Eutawville, SC in 2009. He was the first and oldest African American for Mayor of Eutawville from 2014 to 2017. He was a devoted member of St. Matthews Lodge of International Masons 141 NYC, Eutawville Black VFW, South Carolina Conference of Black Mayors, NAACP, Vance Concerned Citizens, Greater St. Paul United Methodist Church and a former member of Second Tabernacle Baptist Church (NY).
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters and brothers, Lillian Johnson, Catherine Johnson, Viola Johnson, AnnieRuth Johnson, Levi Johnson, George Johnson, Harold Johnson, Lethral Johnson, Fortune Johnson and his son Cedric Johnson.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Rosalind I. Johnson, seven children Anna Phillips (AL), Shirley D. Taste (SC), Margaret Connor (SC), Curtis Johnson (NY), Victor Johnson (FL), Vanessa Hileygar (NY) and Rhonda Royster (NY), fourteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, four great great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He will be missed by many and never forgotten.
